36th Malaysia National Shippers' Council (MNSC)

Malaysia National Shippers' Council (MNSC) was formed in 1972 under the auspices of the Economic and Social Commission of Asia Pacific (ESCAP). It was established with the objective to look after the interest of shippers in the country in order to ensure that efficient shipping services are provided at a fair rate. MNSC is headed by the Deputy Minister (Industry) of International Trade and Industry, Y.B. Dato' Jacob Dungau Sagan, and assisted by two Vice-Chairmen who are elected from the industry. Mr. Mohamed Shahabar Abdul Kareem, Senior Director of the Services Sector Development Division, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) is the Secretary General and the Secretariat of MNSC is located in MITI.

The 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of MNSC was held on 24 November 2009 in MITI. Among members who attended the AGM were representatives from both the government and industry including the Ministry of Transport, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Federation of Malaysia Freight Forwarders, Malaysia Timber Council, Malaysian Palm Oil Board and the Malaysian Rubber Board. The 36th AGM deliberated on issues including the consolidation exercise by Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Pasir Gudang Port, reduction in port free storage period from five days to three days, imposition of container depot charges and liberalisation of cabotage policy between East and West Malaysia.

Among proposed future activities for 2010 by members include dialogues with Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism, Malaysian Institute of Maritime, Malaysian Institute of Transport, port visits and organising a seminar for better understanding of the liberalisation and impact on Malaysian shippers. The Secretariat welcomes industry players/associations that are interested to join MNSC. The annual fee is RM500, with initial membership registration of RM1,000. Applications can be submitted to:
